We need more CHIPKO MOVEMENTS (andolans) in today’s world, as the world has lost 10.34% of total forest area in last 30years. Conservation is preservation of life on earth which is worth fighting for. Chipko movement (Chipko means -to hug) which was a nonviolent protest by villagers especially by women in India, originated in Uttarakhand in 1973.In 1960’s due to growth in commercial developments, govt prevented villagers to manage agricultural lands although they depend heavily on it for food.So in 1964, an environmentalist and social activist Chandi Prasad Bhatt formed an org Dasholi Gram swarojya Sangh which spread awareness among villagers to save trees by usking Chipko tactics. The first woman who participated was Gaura Devi. Protest eventually spread in whole Uttarakhand,which leads to 15 year ban on commercial felling in Uttarakhand. Once again people are protesting to save trees in Dehradun and to live in a clean healthy and sustainable environment. Development is done for the betterment of future generation so we need to focus on Sustainable Development and preserve our environment.
